Structure of Government

Front of City HallThe city of Prospect is structured as a mayor-council form of government. The Mayor is in charge of the executive branch and serves a four-year term. The six-member City Council is responsible for passing city ordinances and budget. City Council members serve two-year terms. Elections are held in November and are on a non-partisan basis. There is no judicial branch in the city government. Cases involving City ordinances are heard by the Code Enforcement Board instead.  All traffic and criminal fines and fees are collected by the Jefferson County court system. The City Hall staff consists of a city administrator, city clerk/treasurer, and maintenance and technology director.
